Domain Tools
Search engine optimization does not just apply to on
the page factors of a web site. Several elements relating to
the domain as well as where and how the domain is hosted will also have a
significant impact on long term search engine positions. Some
of the useful tools on this page will assist in assessing important
factors that should be considered.
SEO Tips:
Domain Names
A successful search engine optimization campaign
will almost always require that your web site has a unique domain
name that is owned by your company. Though there are several
"free" services that offer "free domain names", this set up often
requires that your web site is actually hosted on someone else's
server and is simply using a sub domain of another domain name such
as "www.YourName.SomeoneElse.com".
For as little as a few dollars per month, your own domain name will
not only help to establish a reputable and trustworthy name to your
visitors, it is also an important factor involved in the process of
establishing higher search engine rankings.
The actual domain name that you choose will have a
minimal impact on long term search engine results. A well
established and optimized web site will not need to depend on a
"keyword rich" domain. When selecting the name it will be most
important that you focus on a user friendly, easy to remember name
that best describes your business, products and/or services.
Once upon a time, it was recommended that domain
names contain keywords and hyphens (-) to separate words.
Today, this is no longer such an important factor as the search
engines are placing less relevance on keyword density and more
relevance on several overall factors.
The domain extension (.com, .info, .net, etc.) will
also have little impact on long term search results. Most
visitors will remember you domain more easily with .com extensions
but it really doesn't make too much of a difference to search
engines.
When it comes to search engine optimization, the
only extremely important factor relating to the actual domain name
is ensuring that it is your own domain.
