What To Do If Your
Search Engine Ranking Falls
By Dawn Rowlett
Search Engine Positioning Specialist
When you are comparing your ranking reports from month
to month, it is completely normal to see your positions fluctuating
over time. Some positions will increase and some will decrease.
As long as your site is experiencing more increases in position
and less decreases, do not be concerned. This fluctuation
is due to many factors including the fact that search engines are
constantly adding new pages to their database and changing ranking
algorithms.
If you notice that your keywords are falling drastically or seemed
to have dropped out of the index completely, don't panic right away.
Major engines such as Google and AltaVista will switch between database's,
so try back in a few hours or a day or two and monitor it closely
over the next few weeks.
If you are using an automated program to check your rankings, remember
that a tool and can sometimes be inaccurate. Go to the search
engine itself and find out for sure if your listing has changed.
If it has, be patient.
Sometimes, an engine will drop your placement for no apparent reason,
only to replace it a few days later, sometimes at a higher ranking
than it was in to begin with. Engines will also sometimes
return different results at different times of the day, so be sure
to check throughout the course of the day.
If you find that your listing is not coming back after a few weeks
of monitoring, it's possible that the engines have made major changes.
Your listing may come back in the coming months and it may not.
It's best not to make any changes until you are sure that your position
will not come back.
It is within your best interests to continue to be patient, but
begin to review your site and determine what changes will need to
be made.
Take a look over your competitors pages. Is it obvious why
they were able to win your position? Can you think of ways
that your site can be improved?
If so, begin planning adjustments. Adjust the keyword frequency
and prominence in your meta tags and body. Include more quality
pages with-in your site. Try creating more content oriented
pages. Add more link text that includes your keywords.
Link to popular sites that revolve around a theme similar to yours.
Continue to build up your link popularity.
If you had your site at the top once, you have what it takes.
If you are determined, you can get it back to where it belongs again.
When you are confident that your changes have a good chance at gaining
back their high placement, consider re-submitting your pages.
