Strategic Keyword Placement
By Dawn Rowlett
Search Engine Positioning Specialist
Where to place your keywords is going to depend on
the market that you are targeting and the search engine that will
be ranking your pages.
One very important rule to remember is never use keywords repetitively
for no apparent reason at all. For instance, if your phrase
is "keyword placement" do not pick a place on your page
and say:
keyword placement, keyword placement, keyword placement.... over
and over again.
This is a spam technique and will get recognized.
Spam can penalize and even ban your site from major search engines
completely.
There are many tags within the HTML of your web pages that keywords
can technically be used in.
Some engines will penalize for keywords in certain
tags, some will give added relevancy and some will ignore them completely.
Extreme caution is strongly advised when keywords are being placed
in such as head tags, comment tags, font tags, table summary tags,
etc.
If your site contains frames, your best option is to remove the
site from frames. If this is not an option, you can place
keywords within the text of a no frames tag. However, do NOT simply
list keywords. Actual text should be contained within this tag.
A person visiting your site who is not able to read frames will
be viewing this text -- it is important that the text is worth viewing.
As a general rule, keywords are typically placed within some or
all of the following:
-
The Content Of The Page
-
Title Tags
-
Description Tags
-
Keyword Tags
-
Heading Tags
-
Navigational Structure
-
Link Text
-
Anchor Text
-
Alt Text
-
Site Maps
-
404 Pages
-
Domain Names
-
Page Names
Some engines will give a keyword placed in some of
these areas of your page more weight than others but as long as
these tags are used probably and not abused, none of the above will
cause reason for penalties.
Sometimes it's necessary to place keywords in the
beginning of areas, sometimes at the end and sometimes in the middle.
The web sites that you are competing against for top
placement of a particular word and the specific search engines ranking
your pages will place a large influence on how the strategic placement
of your keywords will affect the placement of your site in search
results.
It's essential to know your market and the search
engines when strategically placing your keywords within your web
site.
The most important rule to remember is that if it does not make
sense to place a keyword somewhere, don't do it!
