Inktomi Notes:

• As of March, 2003, Yahoo! is the new owner of Inktomi.

• Inktomi powers search results on more than 3000 web sites, portals and search engines, reaching over 80% of Internet users.

• Inktomi serves over 80 million search requests per day.

Inktomi Results:

• Inktomi supplies secondary results to HotBot, iWon, Overture, MSN and LookSmart.

• More than likely, your rankings will be different in each Inktomi engine.

Preparing For Inktomi:

• Do NOT Spam!

• Your site should contain quality, informational content.

• Be sure that your site includes original, unique content.

• Increase your site popularity.

• Build your link popularity.

• Inktomi tends to like shorter pages.

• Inktomi will consider your meta tags.

• Inktomi will index framed sites. Only submit the top frame.

• Stay far, far away from "typical" doorway pages.

                Titles:

• Titles can contain around 80 characters.

• The first letter of each word and proper nouns should be the only capitalized letters.

• Analyze the titles of other top ranking competing sites for click appeal idea's.

• Make sure that your title is an accurate representation of your pages content.

• Each page should contain unique titles representing the content of each page.

• Titles should not contain marketing hype.

• Titles should contain your most important keyword phrase.

                Description:

• Your description should be 249 characters.

• Description should begin with your important keyword for that page.

• Each page should contain unique description representing the content of each page.

• If your site is in LookSmart, your LookSmart titles and descriptions may be used in your Inktomi listings.  Your ODP description may also be used.

                Keywords:

• Use your keywords in your URL.

• Include keywords in headline tags.

• Include keywords in your meta keyword tag.

• Do not repeat keywords in your meta keyword tag.

• Be sure to include keywords early in the body.

Inktomi's Crawler:

• The normal crawler will crawl the web every 2 weeks.

• Indexing sites in about 1-3 weeks.

• Crawling time and indexing time can vary dramatically.

• If you do not add your site by the Inktomi pay inclusion service, the best way to get into any Inktomi powered engine is to let the crawlers find your site.

Submitting to Inktomi:

• The best way to get into Inktomi is to pay for your indexing.

• You can submit to Inktomi for $39 for your first URL and $25 for each additional URL.

• The current Inktomi fees are subject to change in the near future.

• Submit all of your important pages, because Inktomi will not spider your links.

• Your pages will be indexed within 48 hours (96 hours at most) and will be crawled every 48 hours for one year.

• You can submit your site through Inktomi's pay inclusion at: http://www.positiontech.com/.

• You can submit one page of your site for free at:
  http://submitit.bcentral.com/msnsubmit.htm.

• If you have more than 1000 quality URL's that you would like to submit, Inktomi recently began to include a pay for performance submission service.  You can find more information on this service at http://www.inktomi.com/products/web_search/connect.html

MSN Results:

• MSN provides sponsored results from paid advertising sources.

• MSN provides primary results from LookSmart.

• Secondary results are provided from Inktomi.

Preparing For MSN:

• Do not cloak! MSN has stated that sites that are found to be using cloaking will be banned and reported to other engines.

• Prepare your site for submission to LookSmart.

• Prepare your site for submission to Inktomi.

Submitting To MSN:

• Submit your site to MSN by submitting to LookSmart

• Sometimes it appears that MSN will drop a ranking just to have it appear again a few days later.  If your ranking drops, give it a few days to reappear.
