How To Search The Internet

Searching on the internet can seem complex at times.  There are many ways that searches can be conducted in the engines to find specific, targeted results for certain information that you are looking for.  As a search engine optimization service, we have put together this list to teach others how to effectively search.

Results on all of these search terms:
Example:  +Internet +Marketing  (or)  Internet AND Marketing
This will return results only for sites that contain the words
Internet and Marketing.

Find sites on any of these words:
Example: Search Engine Placement Services
This will return results with any or all of these words in any
combination.

Omit a term:
Example: Search Engines -AltaVista  (or) 
Search Engines NOT AltaVista
This returns pages that include search engines in the pages but
will not return any results that contain the term AltaVista.

Search for a specific phrase:
Example: "Web Site Promotion"
This returns pages that contain this exact phrase only.

Wildcards - Not sure of spelling or proper use of word:
Example: market*  (or)  optimi*ation
This returns pages that use variations of the word that you have indicated.

To locate one or the other of specific phrases:
Example: HTML Meta Tags AND (create or optimize)
This finds phrases that contain both variations of the above phrase.

Locate results that have certain words near each other:
Example: promotion NEAR "web site hosting"
This returns results that would include pages that have the word
promotion near the phrase web site hosting. 

Search for a site using natural language:
Example: How do I search the Internet?
This will return pages that answer your specific questions.

Find pages with specific words in the title:
Example: +title "submitting companies"
This only returns results of pages that include these words in the title of the page.

Find sites with specific words in the domain:
Example: +domain "search engine marketing"
This only returns pages whose domain names include this phrase.

Look for specific images:
Example: image: "search engine logos"
This returns pages that contain images named after your specified terms.

Locate sites that are hosted by a particular server:
Example host: ceeserve.com
This returns pages that are hosted by your specified company.

Find links to particular sites:
Example: link:internetmarketingwebsites.com
This shows a listing of all of the sites in that engine that are linked to the specified domain.

Find pages containing specific text somewhere throughout the page:
Example: text: learn how to optimize your website for search engines
This will return results to pages that contain your specified words within the page.

Search for sites that are related to a particular site:
Example: related: www.internetmarketingwebsites.com
This will return results for other sites with similar content to the site that you specified.

There are some engines that will support some of these methods of searching, all of these methods or none of these methods.  Experiment by searching multiple engines by using various methods of searching.

Search Engines:
