Google PageRank™
Technology
For Newbie's
By Dawn Rowlett

If your new to the SEO world and have no idea what all of this
talk about the Google PageRank™
Technology is (aka -- PageRank™,
Google PR, PR), it's time for you to catch up! This system is
used by Google, one of today's most popular search engines, in
determining the importance of a web site.
Don't
confuse PageRank™
to mean the same thing as the specific ranking position for a web
site under specified search terms. PageRank™
is an actual system designed to look for certain pieces of criteria
that will determine how important a web site is and how closely it
is related to specific search terms. Google's own
explanation of this technology can be found at
http://www.google.com/technology/. The PageRank
technology assesses a score to a web site based on pre-determined
criteria set by Google. Some major factors to a web sites
PageRank include traffic volume, returning traffic, the sites
structure and the number
Anyone can see an estimated version of this score by
downloading the
Google
ToolBar. After you have downloaded the
Google
ToolBar, you should see a new Google search bar in your browser
that has tons of fabulous features. Right now, we will just
concentrate on the PageRank bar that you should notice within the
Toolbar that looks something like this:
 The
bar can be green, white, green and white or contain no color at all.
If you don't see a bar that looks like this when you open your
browser, follows these steps:
-
Notice the Google Logo and the down arrow that
follows it such as this:

-
Click on the down arrow.
-
Click on options.
-
In the center of the Toolbar Options screen, notice
an area entitled "Page Information".
-
Be sure that the "PageRank Display" box is checked.
-
Click apply.
-
Click OK.
-
You should now see the PageRank bar in the Google
Toolbar when your browser is open.
So What Does This Little
Bar Mean? Place and hover your mouse over
the PageRank bar. Text will be displayed that says something
like: "PageRank is Google's measure of the importance
of this page (5/10)". The first number (5 in this
case), represents the score of the web page. The second number
(always 10) represents the highest score possible.
What Do The Scores Mean?
The higher your score is, the more important Google sees your site
as being. More importance means that your site gets crawled
more frequently, you positions are updated more frequently and the
more pull your site will have over top ranking results for specific
search terms. Put as simply as possible, the
following scores typically mean: 0/10 - The site or
page is probably new. Google does recognize that it exists and
has placed the site in its database for further evaluation at a
later date. A PR0 is not a poor reflection of a web site.
1/10 - The site or the page might be buried in the site and is not
easily accessible throughout the site as a whole AND/OR
the site or page may not be difficult for a spider to crawl through
for some reason AND/OR the site or page may have been penalized by
Google. 2/10 - A score of 2/10 may be the result of
the same factors that contribute to a score of 1/10 but the factors
are not quite as critical. 3/10 - The site is
probably fairly new, small in size and has very little or no quality
incoming links. The page receives very little traffic.
4/10 - The site has some quality incoming links from acceptable web
sites and seems to have some quality informational pages. The site
receives a slow, steady flow of traffic. 5/10 - The
site has a fair amount of quality incoming links and traffic volume.
The site might be larger in size and receives a fair about of steady
traffic with some return visitors. 6/10 - The site is
gaining in popularity with incoming links from quality sites.
Probably from a few other pages that have PR of 5 and six. The site
might be larger in size. Traffic flow and return visitors are on the
rise. 7/10 - The site has many incoming links,
probably many for other higher PR pages such as PR 6 & 7. The
site probably contains a lot of information and has a higher traffic
flow and return visitor rate. 8/10 - The site has
many incoming links, probably many for other high PR pages such as
PR 7 & 8. The site probably contains a lot of information and
has a higher traffic flow and return visitor rate.
9/10 - The site has numerous incoming links, probably many from
other high PR pages such as PR 8 & 9. The site has a
substantial volume of traffic and returning visitors.
10/10 - The web site is extremely large, popular and has an
extremely high number of top quality links pointing to it.
